I have seen decent reports on the Rocket packs by SnugPak. You can Check them out at BQM then do an internet search
for other sources if you like the design.
If you are able to sew you could just buy a plastic framed pak at Wal-Mart then make your own bag out of mid-weight
cordura or pak cloth, it really is easy to put one together.
If you decide to make a bag for a frame remember that you can add axillary webbing shoulder straps to the bag that can fit between the frame and bag when not in use.
Also make a couple stuff sacks and add webbing shoulder straps to these as well. Pack your sleeping bag in the sack then when you are in camp and the bag is out of the sack you will then have a day hiking bag. Make a sack or two from bug net for your food stash (aux head net) , fish net, bait net.
Of course do not forget thrift shops for deals on frames and pack bags, you will be surprised what you can find now that
internal frames dominate the market.
You could also get a pattern for the Gossamer Gear G-4 and build it with the same cordura or pak cloth and have a bomb proof, almost ultralite pak.
REI outlet is another good source but I'm sure you know about them and the other normal discount suppliers.
