Since we have come down to a combination rifle with a rifled barrel and a smoothbore, let's come to a consensus on the cartridge for the rifled barrel.
I've narrowed it down to the ones that seemed to come up in our posts so far. I have probably missed some and listed an "other" accordingly! If
you choose, "Other" please reply with ONE CARTRIDGE! Thank you!
Which cartridge are we taking? (Total Votes: 12) - Closed.22 LR (3 / 25%) .22 WMR (4 / 33.3%) .22 Hornet (0 / 0%) .223 (1 / 8.3%) .30 Carbine (0 / 0%) .30-30 (0 / 0%) .308 (0 / 0%) .30-06 (3 / 25%) .32 Magnum (0 / 0%) .357 Magnum (0 / 0%) .44 Magnum (1 / 8.3%) .444 Marlin (0 / 0%) .45 ACP (0 / 0%) .45-70 (0 / 0%) Other: Please post in a reply so we can tally it! (0 / 0%) |

Though I mentioned my 30-30/20 ga, I voted .44 mag. Though they don't make such a thing I have considered building a custom version though it would be not
cost practical.
As one who spends 300+ day per year in the woods with a rifle and/or a pistol just woods bumming (retired!) I can definately say, a combo gun with a .44 barrel would be incredibly handy. 405 |

I voted for 30/06 because I think it is the number one most versatile cartridge around, especially if you simply consider factory loadings. From small .22
caliber saboted loads up to large dangerous game loads, one can take any game that walks on probably any continent.

It doesn't matter if it has been or is being made, the idea is to come up with the Cabin's "own" firearm!
I am surprised we don't have more votes however! I am reserving my own vote for a bit, as I'm still in a bit of a stalemate mentally between two! |

Savage needs to make a .22 LR over 12 ga model 24 !! I have never seen one but there are rumors that they made a small run of them 24 F model a few years back.
It was discussed here ( http://savageshooters.com/SavageForum/index.php/topic,9010.0.html ). Make sense to me
with the huge variety of loads for both chambers.

I will actually change my vote to .22 LR. Given the larger bore of the shotgun as either 20 or 12 guage and their close range ability to handle larger game, I
would feel comfortable with the .22s ability to reach out and touch game. I chose the LR over the more powerful WMR because of availablity of ammunition, and
the greater possiblity of finding it somewhere in the wilds.

Gotta go with the .30-06, I can load it up or down to take anything I may encounter in the lower 48 and with a bit of luck anything in the other 2.
And as much as I like the .22/.22Mag and have relied on it for decades, it just doesn't have the range/power if it's 'needed'. |

..you have provided tooooo many choices...
Some thoughts to narrow my options down: No full power rifle cartridges...to much recoil...the need for reloaded specialty ammo for small game...increased weight of the gun..ammo weight and bulk is unnecessarily heavy for the task at hand. No .22 Long Rifle...just too under powered for a few of the tasks.. .22 Hornet would be good but if one is going to go Hornet for reloadability one may as well go .223...much more versatile and ammo can be found anywhere... .22 Magnum...a top contender. .38/.357 Magnum...another top contender but will add some bulk to the gun and the ammo is heavier than .223. I am down to .223 and .22 Magnum. Guess I am going to vote .22 Magnum as: I don't have to reload Good variety of ammo, HP, FMJ, small game bullet, light HPs, heavy slow HP... Lots of ammo can be carried.

I see we have more votes for the shotgun gauge than we do the rifle cartridge!

I'm going with the .22WMR as the final tally winner!
