I discussed the available options with a friend of mine about my choices on this scenario. He wondered why I had chosen the hammock system over a regular sleeping bag. There may not be anybody curious about this but just in case there is I'll preemptively offer this. In the milder winter weather we have here in central Texas, it is far different than in the northern portions of the US and we have to plan on some different concerns. For one thing, the weather fluctuates wildly. Temps here in the last three days have swung from 26 degrees in the early mornings to as high as 80 in the daytime. We have had drenching rains from the Texas gulf coast and strong winds from blowing from the Panhandle. Because the temps never stay low for very long, the fire ants never go dormant. A tent or sleeping bag on a warm ground in an environment that favors fireants is inviting misery. I have found that the Hennessey Hammock system, which is lighter to carry than any sleeping bag/tent combination I ever tried in winter and it gets you up off the ground and away from the ever-lovin' fireants seeking to eat you up. My Safari Model weighs about 4 lbs, I think, and is carried in a bag with my GI liner stuffed in there, too. The GI liner was modified by US Cavalry with the full length zipper and a draw string so it can be used as a lightweight sleeping bag. It is enough inside the sealed hammock unless the temps get colder than what we have already experienced in my area. The nylong drawstring bag I carry the hammock and liner in is about 12" long X 5".
