Ammo prices, future needs...Rimfires! |

I've noticed ammo prices have done nothing but continue to increase. So said, focusing on rimfires seems to be a very good idea on a continuous basis. As
a practical standpoint, lots of ammo can still be purchased inexpensively for rimfires compared to centerfires. Even the more expensive rimfires, .22WMR and
.17HMR, etc are still easier on the pocketbook than reloading supplies. Hence, I'm looking at expanding the rimfire supply even greater than the
centerfire. This will include ammo, accessory and firearm purchases in the future.

P-man, I think you are very correct. Prices are going up and steadily. I am buying "bricks" of .22LR everytime I go in Wal-Mart. I have never bought
a case of shotgun shells before but I bought 20 boxes of assorted 12GA last week. Even when we exceed the largest amount of ammo we would ever need, especially
.22LR will always be a great barter item worth more "literally" than gold. I have two Ruger 10/22s but the new Charger looks interesting. Not sure I
can reasonably justify getting it just because it is kind of cool, though! It might be a good idea to obtain and put aside two or three single shot .22 rifles
for family use or for barter. 12GA singles might be good to have a stock of, too.

Hey, Same here ! Whenever 22 ammo goes on sale I try to pick up a few more bricks. The supply has slowly built up to a nice level.I have a great .17 HMR bolt
action but the prices have almost doubled in the last few years. The smaller .17 Mach 2 is a nice flat shooting squirrel round that I am buying for almost 1/3
the price of .17 HMR's! I have been getting .17 Mach 2 at Natchez Shooters Supplies for $3.59 a box (50) for a
while now. This is the place for any info on rimfire --- nice/friendly guys n gals there. RimfireCentral.com - Rimfire Community! Regards,Ken

Sure was a long wait for a ballistic tip in 22 mag. The 22 mag has been a great found for a lot of years.Odd that it took so long to put a a ballistic tip in
one.Maybe to boost the sales of 17 hmr rifles.

I've been warning people for about the last two years to stock up on ammo but only a few listened. The WalMart 550 bulk packs that used to be $8-9.00 are
now $13.95 for the Federal and $16.95 for the Remington. Even though I have a "few" boxes of the Federal stored I have been buying the Remington
because it runs better in the semi-autos than the Federal does.
Over the weekend I did a gun show with a dealer friend of mine. The tables across from us was an ammo dealer from NY...bought 5 bricks of Fiocchi .22 Magnum ammo for $70.00 a brick. Two bricks are going to friends who asked me to pick some up and the other three I am keeping. He only had 7 bricks at the start of the show and the other two were gone by the first afternoon. Was shooting some that I had bought from him in the spring out of a Marlin 1894 .22 Magnum last weekend and it is just as accurate as the Winchester 40 gr. HP that usually gets run through the gun. Another thought are .22 conversion units for semi-auto handguns or a .22 version of the centerfire revolver one carries. I have conversion units for 1911s and S&W rimfire handguns to closely match the centerfire guns I have... You can get in a lot of quality trigger time in without breaking the bank. 9mm still seems the least expensive round on the market these days... If one shops around it can be found for $10.00 or less a box. .38 Special that used to be about the same price as 9mm is up in the $14-16.00 range for the cheap stuff. Buy now or cry later....Bob |

I have it today and it will still shoot into 4" at 100Y if I'm having a good day. .22 is never a bad choice for a scrounging gun. As for a .22 wheelgun, stick with either a dedicated .22lr or .22 Mag. The bore dimensions vary enough to make either a very loose shooting .22 or a tight Magnum. Plus .22's are often not forgiving of riding over the fouling of a different bullet/material. Same with the other handguns. The most effective solution that I've found is to take a dedicated .22lr and punch out one of the chambers for the Magnum cartridge. It's very effective and accurate. Stick with the full size weapons though. Here's a very good write-up.... The Family Gun. And for truly effective .22LR ammo, check this out. I've found it well worth the price. .22 LR Accurizer. |

I notice there hasn't been any traffic on this article for 3 months, hope I'm not too late! Anyway, a quick lesson on economics here, the price of
ammo, just like every thing else, hasn't really gone up, it just that our fiat Federal Reserve dollar is running away with inflation, and with the 12
trillion congress is printing up now for all the bailouts, the dollar is going to collapse very soon! But like said above .22 LR ammo is one of the best barter
items a guy can stash, along with garden seed, food and water, propane, kerocene, powder and primers and a few medical supplies. With that said, I buy the
Remington Thunderbolts for my trade ammo, and ether CCI Stingers, or Quikshok 22 LR for storage, I also pick up a block of the 550 Remington hollowpoints when
I have the money and in Wal-mart. I think last week I paid $17.50 for a brick. The dollars going fast now! I know most of you guys are in the same poverty boat
that we're in now, but if you have any money in the bank, I'd buy gold or silver coin. (that is if you can find any right now) Something you can use in
the black markets that will spring up after the collapse of the dollar.

I'd ask for some ammunition as a stocking stuffer this holiday season.

There is a chain of sports type stores in my area called Academy. In their Sunday adverts this morning they were offering the Rossi single shot 410/22lr with
the two interchangeable barrels and swivels installed on the wood stock for $109.00. The 22lr ammo was on sale for $14.95 per 500. I may grab one of the nifty
little combo guns and the ammo.

I don't mean to offend anybody here, But I picked up a .17 rimfire at the local pawn shop, kept it about a week before I went back and traded it for a
Ruger 10/22. I tried the V-max, and another brand of .17's I don't remember now, but wasn't at all impressed with that round! I feel the bullet is
just too small to buck the slightest breeze. For the price of the ammo, I don't feel it's any better than a .22 rifle using CCI Stingers. the second
day I took it out, there was a wind blowing, gusts up to about 20 MPH, and shooting at 100 yards, I couldn't come within 4" of the x ring, that's
when I decided to trade it in! I've talked to a lot of guys that love that round, and maybe I just got disgusted with it too quick. Anyway, I'll stick
to the .22 LR for my rimfire choice.
A few years ago I was loading 22/250's for a friend that had a sheep herd. And a guy in a gunshop talked him into buying a .17 Remington. I was loading his .17 Remingtons for him also, and he made some long shots on coyotes, he said out about 300 yards, (I'd have to see that) But anyway, he complained that sometimes he would take a shot at a coyote and seems the bullet never got there. I was loading him 25 grain Hornadays at about 3900 FPS, And after talking to a guy that did a lot of shooting with the .17 Rem. he said lots of times you will hit a bug in the air and the bullet will explode and never get to the target. I relayed that to the friend and he figured thats was was happening to his missing shots. He went back to his 22/250 and missed fewer coyotes. He later bought an AR-15 for his truck gun, but camplained that it didn't have the range the 22/250 did! That sort of cured me from wanting a .17 Rem. Badger |
